  7. So, What’s News in April

    Global Accessibility Awareness Day

We have been busy putting plans together for May 18th where Destek will be taking part in Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD).

We are delighted to be invite to once again to attend and speak at several events at one of the leading TV media company and a giant IT company which we have been preparing. One area we want to discuss with those in attendance will be around how we move forward with supporting the aging workforce.

We also busy preparing ‘top tips’ and videos to help support and raise awareness of assistive technologies and accessibility for our social media campaign.

    Accessibility in Qatar

Back in February we were delighted to win a contract to work with 40 organisations in Qatar to improve the accessibility of their websites.

We are now several months in to the project and we are ahead of schedule and it is good to see that the organisations are committed to accessibility to ensure that their users with disabilities have a good experience when accessing goods information and services.

    Workforce Assistive Technology Training

We have continued to help Government Departments in London and Wales by providing training in assistive technologies and telephony solutions so that staff are able to work effectively.

It is great to see that some of the Government departments are listening and supporting their staff this not only enables staff to work productively but also allows organisations to retain the valuable core skills and experience staff bring to the organisation.

  8. Support is out there!

It used to be a well-known phrase ‘Life begins at 40’ but as we are living longer and the state pension age for retirement gets further and further aware a majority of our society will be working well in to their 60’s and even 70’s.

The benefits of making the right reasonable adjustments can empower staff to be more productive and help the organisation to maintain the skills and knowledge and reduce costs of recruiting and training new staff.

However, many employers face challenges who must find new ways of supporting older workers who may acquire new health conditions, impairments or disabilities and quite often do not know where to begin or where to go for help.

It can also be time consuming for line managers or HR teams who may have to contact different organisations or suppliers for one off solutions where staff may need several adjustments to complete the complete solution.

For instance, making some adaptions to the desk or mouse sometimes improves the experience but we really need to look at all aspects of the environment and role of the individual as bespoke to them.

Many organisation with the best of intentions will pigeon hole disabilities with a solution but we must remember that one size does not fit al and we need to respond to each case individually. To do this organisations really need to look at the overall culture of their business and putting in place effective and efficient support for line managers to access help to make the reasonable adjustments.

    So, what solutions are available?

Destek offer a suite of services that offers organisations solutions to digital barriers staff my experience and help manage reasonable adjustments requests internally through to referral.

Once referred Destek will complete an assessment of the barriers we will work with both the individual and the organisation to find software or equipment that would improve access to be able to sustain their current role

    OR

We can help with the recruitment process and support both the recruit and organisation from the onset.

  11. Destek’s Andrea Kennedy to Speak at Travel Technology Europe Event’s Tech Huddle!

Destek are pleased to be speaking at this year’s Travel Technology Europe’s Show new Tech Huddle this week.

    co founder Andrea Kennedy

On Wednesday 23rd 11.15am -11.55am Andrea Kennedy will be speaking on the subject:

Want to tap into a potential market of $3.5 trillion and make travel easier for people with disabilities?

There are over a billion people with disabilities in the world.  If that figure were a populous, the country would be roughly three times larger than the US!

It may be a surprise when you hear the majority of the Travel industries digital products such as websites, payment portals and ticket kiosks are inaccessible to many people with disabilities, through outdated, or inaccessible development techniques.

Across the world, law states that digital public environments must be accessible, with the US Government even taking steps to fine Airlines with inaccessible digital environments for every day of their inaccessibility.  In light of our aging population, and the associated barriers that it brings, it makes sense that our product and service offerings should be provided as accessible and usable to all.

I aim to show how you can start the journey to becoming an accessible company who can indeed reach this market and aid people with disabilities across the globe.  It isn’t rocket science and the journey is an enlightening one.

From electronic medical records, to advances in bio-medical engineering and patient facing technology, delivery methods are changing at an ever increasing rate.

Today there is more emphasis being made by giving the ‘patient’ greater control of their own care with the use of technology. Advances to improve the delivery of healthcare services using technology are rising but are these technological innovations accessible to all, regardless of age or disability?
